Care & Maintenance
It is important to regularly clean and properly care for the prosthesis. Appropriate use can help to avoid unnecessary damage, prolonging the life of the prosthesis. Refer to Instructions for Use document for full information.
Protection
Do
- Avoid side impact to the digits.
- Hold/carry objects close to palm with all fingers fully closed around objects to evenly distribute the weight across the digits.
- Position objects close to the knuckles when pulling/pushing.
- Push up with fully closed fist with force at knuckles.
- Always wear an approved cover.
Do Not
- Lift, carry, pull or push objects with the fingertips.
- Block the index finger from closing around thinner objects - the object will be less secure within the hand if the digits are not able to conform around its shape.
- Use for heavy lifting. Do not expose to excessive or high forces, particularly on fingertips and side of the digits.
- Expose to water, liquid, dust, high temperature or flames.
Cleaning
i-Limb hand
The i-Limb hand covering, electrode surface and magnetic charger port can be cleaned with a soft damp cloth and mild soap.
Clean the electrode surface regularly.
Clean the cover with isopropyl alcohol once a week to help with disinfection.
Note: do not submerge the i-Limb hand, cover, electrode surface or magnetic charger port in water. Do not use any strong chemicals.
i-Digits
The i-Digits wristband, digits, cover and electrode surface can be cleaned with a soft damp cloth and mild soap.
Isopropyl alcohol can also be used to help with disinfection.
Clean the electrode surface regularly.
Do not use any strong chemicals.
Note: Do not submerge the i-Digits, wristband, cover, electrode surface or charger in water.
Fitting a Covering
Donning an i-Limb Skin Active, i-Limb Skin Contour and i-Limb Skin Natural cover
- Bring i-Limb hand into the don/doff position (all fingers extended and thumb closed to approx. 1cm from index finger) and turn the hand off. The position can also be achieved using the don/doff Quick Grip.
- For S/M/L hands: fit protective mitt first. Ensure reinforcement patches are on the inside (next to the i-Limb hand).
- Line up the cover with the fingers of the i-Limb hand, and slide cover downwards.
- When the fingers are mostly donned, pull the thumb opening over the thumb - being careful not to exert too much pressure on the thumb.
- Slide the remainder of the cover over the i-Limb hand.
- Make sure each digit tip is fitted to the cover.
- Do not pull the cover too tightly over the hand.
Donning an i-Limb Skin Match cover
- Bring i-Limb hand into the don/doff position and turn the hand off. The position can also be achieved using the don/doff Quick Grip.
- For S/M/L hands: fit protective mitt first. Ensure reinforcement patches are on the inside (next to the i-Limb hand).
- Spray the outer surface of the cover with isopropyl alcohol.
- Invert the cover to the level of the finger openings.
- Ensure the fingers of the cover are straight and not folded together.
- Align the cover finger openings with each digit of the i-Limb hand and slide it down onto the digits.
- Place thumb opening of cover over the thumb.
- Slide the cover carefully over the remainder of the i-Limb hand, without applying too much pressure over the thumb.
- Ensure the cover tips are fully fitted to the digit tips, and there are no folds / creases in the cover.
- Check the function of the i-Limb hand and ensure full opening and closing is possible and the digit tips align.
Doffing all Covers
- Bring the i-Limb hand into the same position as for donning and switch off.
- Pull cover gently at each digit to release, and ease the cover upwards.
- Carefully ease the full cover off, without applying too much pressure on the thumb, until fully removed.
- For S/M/L hands: the protective mitt will typically come off with the cover, if it does not slide mitt upwards off of the i-Limb hand.
Digit Alignment
After replacing a cover if there is any misalignment of the digits, this can be resolved in Biosim (on an iPad). Go to settings - grip settings and select the affected grip. A delay to the initial movement of the digit can be applied, increase the number to increase the delay. Select 'save' to apply the timing change.
For fixed thumb pinch and tripod grips; increasing the number relates to increasing outward thumb rotation and flexion.
Note: the delay is applied from the full open position of the digit.
Digit Replacement
The digits of an i-Limb hand or i-Digits can be replaced if damaged. i-Limb hands and i-Digits are only compatible with Össur digits. Ensure the i-Limb hand / i-Digits is switched off before replacing a digit.
Equipment required:
- For extra small hands and i-Digits a T6 or T8 screwdriver is required (depending on the version).
- For small, medium and large i-Limb hands a T10 screwdriver is required.
- A new screw should be used each time when replacing a digit.
Finger removal and replacement
- Use screwdriver to loosen the screw at the knuckle block and remove the digit.
- Select the appropriately sized replacement digit, place into knuckle block and secure screw. For extra small i-Limb hands the screw should be torqued to 1Nm. For i-Digits and all other hand sizes, hand tighten the screw.
Thumb removal and replacement
XS i-Limb hand
- Rotate thumb to palmar position.
- Remove index digit.
- Loosen thumb knuckle block screw.
- Remove thumb.
- Replace the thumb following the steps in reverse, ensuring thumb and index screws are torqued to 1Nm.
Small, Medium and Large i-Limb hand
- Rotate the thumb to the lateral position.
- Remove palmar fairing.
- Access thumb screw from medial to lateral direction.
- Remove thumb.
- Replace the thumb following the steps in reverse. When tightening the thumb screw and replacing the palmar fairing care should be taken to avoid pinching wires.
