For most 11-year old’s, life is about family, friends and fitting in at school.  As part of a busy family of nine, this was certainly true for the outgoing and social Femita Ayanbeku.  But her typical pre-teen challenges would soon be forgotten when a major car accident would almost claim her life.

Femita was traveling in the backseat of a station wagon, when the driver lost control of the vehicle.  She was ejected from the car.   At the scene, Femita stopped breathing.  Later, while at the hospital, doctors determined that her leg was severely damaged and risked cutting circulation off throughout the rest of her body.  Within days, a decision had to be made - her leg or her life.  Days after waking up in the hospital, Ayanbeku learned her leg had been amputated.

11살의 페미타는 ‘친구들이 나를 어떻게 생각할지, 내 몸의 조각 하나를 잃었는데 어떻게 학교로 돌아가지’라는 생각으로 가득했습니다.

But those thoughts didn’t last long.  She saw her parent’s concern and worry so Femita was determined to be positive. 그녀의 부모님은 그녀를 위한 재활을 바로 시작했고, 두달 만에 학교로 돌아왔습니다. 휠체어에서 의족을 착용하게 되면서 그녀의 일상을 이어 나갔습니다. 고등학생 때 농구를 즐겨했지만, 스포츠 전용 의족을 착용하지 않아 불편을 피하기 어려웠습니다. It would be years before she tried something different. 

절단 장애인을 위한 오서 모빌리티 클리닉을 참여하여 처음으로 오서의 러닝 블레이드 의지를 착용하게 되었고, 그날 그녀는 모든 것이 새롭게 느껴졌습니다.

그녀는 다른 절단 수술을 받은 사람들을 지원하기 위해 'Limb-it-less (리밋리스 = 제한 없는) 크리에이션’라는 비영리 단체를 시작했고, 나중에 그녀만의 오서 러닝 블레이드를 착용하게 되었습니다. 또한, 달리기에 대한 그녀의 사랑은 또 다른 패럴림픽 선수인 제롬 싱글턴과 노스이스턴대학의 전 오랜 육상 코치 셔먼 하트를 소개받으면서 시작되었습니다.

Her talent was evident. But it was her work ethic that prompted her coach to insist she run competitively.  Femita continued training and earned her place on Team USA. Within six months, she became the US national champion in the 100m and went on to represent the United States at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and again at the 2017 World Championships.  Most recently, she claimed the bronze medal at the 2019 World Championship in Dubai. Femita is expected to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic games wearing her Ossur Cheetah Xtreme with pride.
