The American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association (AOPA) has awarded our founder, Össur Kristinsson, with their 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Össur Kristinsson was born a congenital below-knee amputee and studied to become a Certified Prosthetist Orthotist in Sweden. In 1971, he founded an O&P Clinic in Iceland and that clinic still operates today.

Working with patients on a daily basis and relying on his own experience, Össur set out to create a better solution to protect amputees’ limbs. The Iceross® silicone liner received its first global patent in 1986 and quickly became the standard of care for limb comfort and socket suspension.

Össur Kristinsson transformed the O&P profession, and while no longer a part of daily operations, his legacy remains at the center of all we do. His vision and entrepreneurial spirit captured the hearts and minds of his colleagues back in the 1970’s and that spirit remains in our company’s DNA to this day.

Today, Össur is a leading global provider of mobility solutions, operating in 36 countries around the world and employs more than 4,000 people.

We sincerely thank AOPA and its members for recognizing Össur Kristinsson’s extraordinary efforts and impact on the O&P profession.
