Össur Design Studio Will Offer High-Resolution 3-D Scanning and Modification for Custom Sockets and Fabrication

FOOTHILL RANCH, CA and SAN FRANCISCO, CA – May 08

Global prosthetics innovator Össur has purchased the rights to proprietary design and visualization software used in the shape capture, design and manufacture of prosthetics and orthotics from Standard Cyborg Inc., a privately held startup company that develops cutting-edge computer vision tools, the companies announced jointly today.

The technology allows O&P professionals to replace less efficient processes for socket-making with computer-aided design (CAD) capabilities that use a tablet to capture accurate, 3-D images and make modifications of their patient’s residual limb. That socket design can then be sent directly to Össur, to create the custom socket in support of the Össur Legs Program.

Saving Time, Costs, Labor and Logistics

“Because every amputee’s anatomy is unique, their socket requires precise measurement and customization. This technology, which we consider to be the premier CAD design solution for custom sockets, will enable O&P professionals to more easily participate in the Össur Legs Program and deliver solutions to their patients.” said Zach Taylor, Össur Vice President of OPS.

According to Taylor, use of Design Studio should translate into may benefits for the O&P practitioner and their practice, noting that the time savings, flexibility to make modifications anywhere, scaling existing resources, and additional documentation are just a few of the ways Design Studio adds value. [Those benefits, combined with the Össur Legs Program, provide an efficient and cost-effective model for the delivery of prosthetic systems.]

“The prospect of cost-effective, accessible CAD design for custom-made prosthetic sockets has long been an unfulfilled clinical need,” said Jeff Huber, CEO of Standard Cyborg. Huber, who was born with Fibular Hemimelia and became an amputee as an infant, was inspired to create visualization and design technologies that could be more widely accessible, including the creation of custom-designed prosthetics that could potentially benefit thousands of amputees worldwide. “Before Standard Cyborg, design technologies for prosthetic sockets were unwieldy, time-consuming and required expensive hardware. We are glad this technology has found a home in Össur, so that prosthetists will be able to help even more people with limb loss and limb difference,” he said.
