Andrea Lanfri aims to summit Mount Everest on two prosthetic legs
Paralympian, mountaineer and Össur Ambassador Andrea Lanfri set off from his home in Italy on March 23, 2022 for a journey of a lifetime. His destination is Nepal and the famous Himalayas with the ultimate goal of ascending Mount Everest (8,848m)
The expedition is part of his "Seven Summits project", where Andrea aims to climb the highest peaks on seven continents. The first summit was conquered in August 2020 when he summited Mont Blanc.
Andrea is a double below-knee amputee and says, "No Italian with multiple amputations has ever attempted a climb above 8000 metres, I will be the first to achieve this goal."
Andrea’s legs were amputated below the knee in 2015 following illness and has always been very determined. He has never stopped believing in himself and his dreams. In 2016 and 2018, he won two silver and one bronze medal in the Para Athletics European and World Championships. After Athletics, he decided to devote himself completely to the mountains and in recent years he has summited a number of mountains.
Always full of surprises, Andrea Lanfri is not only attempting to summit Mount Everest, he also went for another record. On 1 April 2022, he arrived at Gorakshep at an altitude of 5,190m, the last village before Base Camp, and achieved another incredible feat.
Andrea ran the highest mile (1.6km) in the world on the Cheetah Xtreme blades in just 9 minutes and 48 seconds.
He trained for months and achieved his goal of completing the mile in under 10 minutes.
"It was not easy at all. The terrain I ran on was very uneven. I did a few practice laps, then took off. When I looked at my watch in the last hundred meters, I knew I could do it and I gave everything I had in me. In the end I stopped the clock at 9 minutes 48 seconds.”
His record has now been submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records for approval.
Andrea's prosthetic feet
Andrea is using three different types of prosthetic feet for his expedition. For the trail approach he uses the Pro-Flex XC, for the ice and snow climbs he uses the Pro-Flex LP Align and for training he uses the Cheetah Xtreme blades.
Unlike people without amputation, Andrea will not wear heavy high-altitude boots, but lightweight and naturally cramponable footwear.
His main challenge is not the risk of frostbite, but rather the formation of blisters, calluses, inflammation and bruising of his residual limbs. "Especially at high altitudes - where there is less sweating - I have to be very careful. Over the years I've developed some tricks to manage the risks, but surely at the end of the adventure there will be some problems."
Andrea will attempt to summit Mount Everest after May 7th and Össur wishes him the best of luck on this amazing expedition.
