Challenges in sport with a prosthetic leg
What challenges should I expect when doing sports with a prosthetic leg?
First and foremost, your prosthetic leg must be suitable for the sport you want to engage in.
Can you use your everyday prosthesis, or do you need a specific sports prosthesis? It's best to clarify this in advance with your prosthetist, who will be happy to advise you.
Generally, there are no common problems that consistently occur when participating in sports with a prosthesis, as each user and their fitting are individual.
However, the socket should ensure a good fit, and the entire structure of the prosthesis, including the knee joint and prosthetic foot, is tailored to you.
It should be possible to use the prosthesis continuously without pain.
Special sports prosthesis?
In athletics or triathlons, you’ll need a special sports prosthetic leg with a blade which you can use with your socket.
If you have a microprocessor-controlled knee joint, it may need to be switched with a mechanical knee joint and your everyday foot may be replaced by a carbon blade - known as a running blade.
Running with a carbon blade needs practice. It is therefore advisable to take part in our mobility clinic events that take place several times a year to receive professional instruction.
How can I prevent damage to the prosthesis?
To prevent damage to your prosthesis due to overload and to ensure your own safety, you should consult with your prosthetist beforehand and regularly have your prostheses checked.
If you have any concerns after or during the activity, contact your prosthetist.
Important
Consult a healthcare professional or prosthetist if unsure about the recommendations' suitability for an individual.
