The art of getting the best out of your prosthesis

Sport is far more than just a hobby for me - it's a passion that drives me. I love watching Formula 1, football, tennis and athletics. And I also live sport actively: CrossFit, swimming and the gym are part of my everyday life. Sport means freedom to me. It's the pure joy of living and a booster for my self-confidence. When I do sport, I test my limits and find out whether I can go just that little bit further. This feeling is incredibly motivating, energize me and makes me proud of the progress I can see and feel.

I come from El Bierzo, a small, beautiful region in the north-west of Spain, close to the Portuguese border. This area belongs to the Castilla y León region and is famous for its wine-growing. Even though I now live in vibrant Madrid, my roots will always remain in El Bierzo. I was born and grew up there, and this connection will stay with me for the rest of my life.

This year I graduated in journalism in Madrid - my absolute dream job. Now I'm thinking about working as a sports journalist, maybe even in radio. However, I'm still unsure because there are so many exciting directions. At the age of 24, the world is open to me and I'm looking forward to finding my way.

Health is a gift

I learnt the biggest lesson of my life in hospital. At the age of 15, I lost my leg due to osteosarcoma - a bone tumour. This experience taught me to appreciate everyday life and to enjoy life in its simplicity - simply because you are healthy. Waking up every day and being able to lead a normal life is a gift that I realise even more consciously today. Since then, I have experienced life more intensely.

In my darkest moments, my brother was an indispensable support. He has accompanied and supported me, and I am infinitely grateful to him for that. We have a very special bond.

However, the time during and after the amputation also showed me that my greatest strength lies in mastering even the most difficult moments in the best possible way. In life, there are always difficult situations that we can't control. What we can influence, however, is our attitude towards them and what we make of them.

Back to athletics

My biggest dream is to get back into athletics professionally and take part in competitions. That would be the fulfilment of my passion. Even if I don't know whether I'll ever be able to do that again, I'll do everything I can to realize my dream. Because dreams give life direction - and the hope that anything is possible.
