Can Power Knee be used with bone-anchored implants (osseointegration)?
- Yes. It is safe, from a loading perspective, to use Power Knee™ with bone-anchored implants.
- This evaluation is based upon results from a recently completed (2022) study under the guidance of Prof. Laurent Frossard
- The study found that the forces created by the Power Knee™ were all well under the limit of what was considered as safe for bone-anchored implants (press-fit and screw-type).
- The subjects tested during this study were fitted to the Australian Press-Fit system (OPL)
- Össur has revised the indications in the Power Knee™ IFU to to now be inclusive of bone anchored prostheses by removing the following statement: "The device is to be used exclusively for the exo-prosthetic fitting of amputations of the lower limb"
- NOTE: Some bone-anchored system manufacturers may still have contraindications for use with actively-powered knee joints listed in their documentation. OPRA system from Integrum (Dr. Rickard Brånemark, CEO) currently has a statement in their IFU indicating incompatibility with actively-powered knee joints
