Prior to amputation

Prior to amputation surgery, it's recommended that the entire rehabilitation team meet to develop a collaborative plan for your care and rehabilitation. Having the surgeon, physical therapist and prosthetist working together can produce the best outcomes.

When the amputation surgery is the result of trauma or due to a medical emergency, a collaborative planning session may not be possible. Regardless, a team meeting should be scheduled as early as possible to help develop your strategic rehabilitation plan.

Whether it occurs prior to the amputation or soon after, the consultation with your medical team is the ideal time to ask questions and set reasonable expectations for your rehabilitation. An amputation can impact the family dynamic, so maintaining an open dialog is important. Consider having members of your support system present and participating during the consultations is recommended. We encourage you to write down any questions ahead of time, and actively engage in a conversation during the team meeting.

An amputation is a dramatic life event. Because it often takes longer to adjust emotionally than it does for the physical scars to heal, it is important to develop strong coping strategies. Meeting with an adjustment counsellor and/or peer mentor prior to the amputation surgery is recommended.
