• Bionics

  Bionic Technology by Össur is a precise fusion of artificial intelligence and human physiology. When a limb is lost, the normal interaction between body and brain is severed, but with its state-of-the-art bionic technology, Össur has been able to replicate this link and develop intelligent prosthetics that think for themselves. The actions of walking, running and even ascending stairs are now closer than ever to natural motion. Össur is currently expanding the bionic concept in partnership with some of the world’s most advanced technological organizations.

• Carbon Fiber
  

  Carbon fiber composites are used extensively in the aerospace industry for their superior strength and flexibility. Through its patented designs incorporating layered carbon fiber, Össur has created prosthetic feet that are able to store and return energy to the user as they walk, improving stability, energy efficiency and gait. The special layering process is optimized through extensive computer analysis and mechanical testing, ensuring motion is proportional to impact and the user's weight. More recently, carbon fiber and its beneficial properties have been utilized by Össur in a wide range of braces, as well as artificial knees.

• Silicone

  Validated by decades of medical use, silicone is bio-inert, which means it doesn't react with the skin in any way. It is also extremely durable, easy to clean, and the only material that allows different levels of softness and strength to be incorporated into Iceross liner designs (the interface between a limb and a prosthetic socket). Össur has worked with silicone for close to forty years, developing an extensive knowledge of the material, the best manufacturing processes and applications that go far wider than just liners.

• Textiles

  Össur’s textile manufacturing produces high quality stockings and support tights, used extensively in compression therapy to tackle poor circulation. The Company draws on decades of cotton weaving experience and today uses modern, high-precision equipment to deliver the right degree of support for individual needs. Neoprene is another of Össur’s specialisms, used mainly for thermotherapy to reduce swelling.

What next?

Tomorrow’s world will see astounding new advances coming into play. ‘Power motion’ is already opening up new horizons with its capacity to replace lost muscle function. Neurosensing – the connection of a prosthetic device to the human neurological system – is proving successful in enabling the user to regain voluntary control over a prosthesis at a neurological level, instead of having to make the prosthetic work solely by means of joint and muscular activity. These and other technologies, which have the potential to make Life Without Limitations a reality for more and more people, are firmly on Össur’s radar.
